Vega rocket launches 53 satellites in return-to-flight mission

Europe’s Vega rocket is back in action.
The four-stage booster, which is operated by French company Arianespace, lifted off tonight (Sept. 2) at 9:51 p.m. EDT (0151 GMT on Sept. 3) from Guiana Space Center in South America, carrying 53 satellites to orbit for 21 different customers from 13 countries.
Today’s mission was the first for the 98-foot-tall (30 meters) Vega since July 10 of last year, when the rocket suffered a major anomaly during the launch of the United Arab Emirates’ FalconEye1 Earth-observation satellite. Both the rocket and FalconEye1 were lost.

By September 2019, investigators had traced the anomaly’s likely cause to a thermo-structural failure in part of the Z23 motor, which powers Vega’s second stage.

Tonight’s return to flight suggests that problem has been remedied. And the launch was a milestone in another way as well: It marked the debut of Europe’s new Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) satellite dispenser.
The SSMS dispenser is designed to help make European rockets a more attractive option for customers looking to launch small satellites on rideshare missions, European Space Agency (ESA) officials have said.
Competition for the growing rideshare market is already stiff. For example, launch industry heavyweight SpaceX offers piggyback rides aboard its Falcon 9 rocket for as little as $1 million.
“This flight heralds a new era in rideshare opportunities for small satellites and shows our commitment to extending Europe’s access to space capabilities to serve European institutions, strengthen our space industry and grow our economy,” Renato Lafranconi, Vega exploitation program manager at ESA, said in a prelaunch statement.
The SSMS consists of an upper portion and a lower portion. On today’s mission, which Arianespace calls VV16, the upper part hosted seven microsatellites weighing between 33 lbs. and 330 lbs. (15 to 150 kilograms). The lower portion housed 46 smaller cubesats, which ranged in size from 0.25U to 6U, Arianespace representatives wrote in a mission description. (One cubesat “U,” or unit, is a cube 4 inches, or 10 centimeters, on a side.)
All 53 satellites are scheduled to be deployed by one hour and 45 minutes after liftoff.
The 53 satellites that flew on VV16 will perform a variety of tasks in orbit, from Earth observation to telecommunications to technology demonstrations, Arianespace representatives said.
The Vega rocket is designed to loft relatively small payloads or, as on today’s flight, lots of very small satellites. The booster debuted in February 2012 and had racked up 14 consecutive successful missions before the FalconEye1 failure last year.
Today’s launch was originally scheduled to occur in June but was pushed back repeatedly by bad weather and scheduling issues.

Coronavirus Indonesia: infections could reach 1 million despite lower official tally, expert warns

Indonesia is poised to reach 1 million Covid-19 infections, an epidemiologist has warned, despite the official tally reflecting only a fraction of that total. Meanwhile, more than 180 health care workers, including more than 100 doctors, have died fighting the pandemic in Indonesia, which has one of the world’s highest fatality rates among medical staff.
The Indonesian Health Ministry’s website on Wednesday reported 3,075 new cases, bringing the country’s total to 180,646. Its 7,616 deaths are the most in Southeast Asia. However, according to Iwan Ariawan, an epidemiologist from University of Indonesia, Indonesia’s low rate of testing means the more accurate caseload could be between five times and 10 times the official figure.
“When the accumulated cases that are reported (reach) the 200,000 region, the real total number of accumulated cases … is highly likely to have reached 1 million,” Iwan said.
According to Our World in Data, an online scientific publication that works in collaboration with University of Oxford researchers, Indonesia has one of the world’s lowest per capita testing rates, testing 58 people per 1 million population daily. By comparison, Malaysia tests 315 people per 1 million population daily.
In August, Indonesia added 66,420 new cases, an increase of 61 per from July. At that rate, Indonesia’s official caseload could reach 200,000 in coming weeks.
The spread of infection has increased rapidly in Indonesia, with 17 per cent of tests producing positive results. That rises to almost 25 per cent outside Jakarta. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 5 per cent of tests producing positive results indicates the outbreak is not under control.
The recent Eid Fitr and Eid Adha holidays as well as Independence Day celebrations have been identified as factors in the increased number of infections.
“From our observations, during the long holidays, the movement of people increased and two weeks following that, the number of Covid-19 cases spiked,” Iwan said, adding that more people have been visiting markets and returning to offices.
The country’s health care workers have been acutely affected, with 102 doctors, nine dentists and 70 nurses dying of Covid-19, the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) said.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday paid tribute to the workers who have died during the pandemic, expressing his “deepest appreciation” for their dedication and professionalism. He urged the public to be more disciplined in following health protocols and to wear masks to help ease the burden on health care workers.
According to Dr Adib Khumaidi, head of the IDI’s risk mitigation team, Indonesian health care workers account for more than 1 per cent of the country’s casualties – the highest percentage in Asia and the third-highest in the world, trailing only Russia and Egypt.
Adib cited several factors for the high casualty rate among Indonesian health care workers, including heavy workloads and insufficient time to rest, resulting in exhaustion.
He urged hospitals to devise schedules to better manage fatigue, which makes workers more vulnerable to the virus, and to provide more personal protection equipment, better ventilation and more air purifiers.
Experts have refuted claims that more widespread testing is the sole explanation for increased infections after clusters emerged in schools, industrial workplaces and households.
“I am personally no longer buying the idea of ‘increased testing’ in explaining more Covid-19 cases in Indonesia,” said Muhammad Habib Abiyan Dzakwan, a researcher from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies disaster management research unit. “I believe that the infections grow way faster than the increase in PCR testing.
“I am afraid that we’re almost hitting rock bottom,” he said. “Almost all provinces reported … that isolation rooms in their referral hospitals are fully occupied with the Covid-19 patients.”
Among the new clusters, more than 600 Islamic school students in East Java’s regency of Banyuwangi have tested positive for the coronavirus, a health ministry official said on Tuesday, the latest o…

Why Amitabh ‘Big B’ Bachchan, ‘India’s Tom Cruise’ Akshay Kumar and the 3 Khans – Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman – are still Bollywood’s unbeatable 5

Five Bollywood actors have dominated India’s pop culture consciousness for decades – Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and of course, Akshay Kumar.
Professionally, they procure title and tailor-made roles and franchise films, and head massive productions. Personally, it’s a life of private jets, sea-view mansions, a fleet of imported cars … Everything about their lives is king-size.
Read about these five men who continue to rule the roost in Mumbai’s tinsel town.
Amitabh ‘Big B’ Bachchan
Now 77 years old, there is arguably no Indian alive more famous than Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan (whose name in Sanskrit translates to “immeasurable splendour” or, prophetically, “everlasting light”) survives, outlives and outshines all celebrity. Every weekend, crowds gather outside his home in Mumbai for a sighting of the living legend – and his equally famous family of actors – wife Jaya, son and Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Bachchan catapulted to stardom with the box office success of the action drama Zanjeer (Chains) in 1973, and went on to do a series of movies that established his status as India’s “angry young man”. (Until Zanjeer, he had appeared in smaller roles in several films.)
Since then, his career has remained unmatched – no other actor has held the audience captive the way he has. All his contemporaries are in various stages of retirement, and men decades younger do not possess his work ethic, finesse or stamina (he stars in two or more films annually without fail).
Though he has won a handful of lifetime achievement awards, Big B (a tabloid moniker) marches on with a tireless spirit. Neither Covid-19 nor quarantine can stop this emperor of Indian cinema.
The Khans
Aamir Khan, 55, Salman Khan, 54, and Shah Rukh Khan, 54, (not related to each other) are powerhouse talents that run mini empires of their own.
Each is heavily involved in film production (since outside producers cannot afford them), and receive the largest pay cheques from various branches of advertising, global tours, stage shows and celebrity appearances. When one of them has a film about to release, other stars move their own release dates (the Khans also do this with each other’s films).
Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh have monopolised the top tier of the pyramid for so long, no upstart has been able to usurp their hard-earned position. Each started their career in the early 90s, and their stardom and rabid fan following is hard won and seemingly unshakeable.
In Asia, perhaps the most well-known is Aamir Khan – he has one of the largest fan bases in China and Japan, unlike any other Indian actor. Billions have seen 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal. Here he is, flanked by his co-stars in his biggest global hit, 3 Idiots.
Salman Khan, popular known as “bhai” (brother/friend), has a cult following and is deified in ways that defy logic. The least favoured among serious film critics, with personal scandals trailing his every move, Khan’s films are frothy and fun.
His films are the bane of reviewers, stuffed as they are with slapstick comedy, mindless action and cheesy lines. But Salman rules with immunity and impunity – thanks to his loyal followers, even his worst films are critic-proof and make millions of dollars at the box office.
Shah Rukh Khan, aka King Khan, is perhaps the most adventurous of the trio – he has been known to make modern, hi-tech films while trying to rewrite the boy-meets-girl narrative that is the Bollywood stereotype.
There are gigantic leaps of faith and investment, too. Fan, Zero and Ra-One were all high concept, offbeat and expensive productions. The ticket sales don’t always keep up with his vision, but at least he tries. In the meantime, India waits for King Khan to announce his next film, while he teases his 22.2 million social media followers with cryptic messages.
Akshay Kumar – India’s ‘Tom Cruise
Once ridiculed for his outrageous action films and popular among the MTV generation for his energetic song-and-dance routines, Akshay Kumar was never seen as a serious actor. Post marriage and fatherhood, however, the star (born Rajiv H…
