Last-gasp PSG beat Atalanta to reach Champions League semis

By Simon Evans
LISBON (Reuters) – Paris St Germain scored two late goals, including a stoppage-time winner from substitute Eric Choupo-Moting, to beat outsiders Atalanta 2-1 and end the Serie A side’s Champions League dream in their quarter-final on Wednesday.
Atalanta, in their first Champions League campaign, went ahead with a curling effort from Mario Pasalic in the 27th minute and held out until the 90th when Brazilian defender Marquinhos equalised for the French champions.
With Atalanta wilting, Choupo-Moting turned the ball home in the third minute of added time to end Qatari-backed PSG’s embarrassing run of recent quarter-final and round of 16 exits and send them into the last four for the first time since 1995.
The Ligue 1 side will face either Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig, who meet on Thursday, in their semi-final.
“When I came on, I thought to myself, ‘We can’t lose, we can’t go home like that.’ I was confident in myself, confident in the team and then the rest is the history of Paris,” said Cameroon international Choupo-Moting.
“It was a crazy game, a tough game and opponents.”
The first half was all about Neymar who had four good chances but squandered them all.
The Brazilian burst clear of the Atalanta defence in the third minute but sidefooted wide with only goalkeeper Marco Sportiello to beat.
He also got caught in two minds between shooting and passing to Mauro Icardi, shot wide after another mazy run which included a nutmeg and made a complete hash of another chance gifted to him by Hans Hateboer’s wayward back-pass.

Despite boasting only a fraction of PSG’s spending power, Atalanta were more than equal on the pitch and went ahead when an exchange of passes ended with the ball falling to Pasalic who met it first time to curl his shot past Keylor Navas.
Berat Djimsiti should have increased Atalanta’s lead after the break but sliced the ball wide and the game turned when PSG introduced their France striker Kylian Mbappe, who had not started because of an ankle injury.
Mbappe and Neymar were both denied by Sportiello but, as PSG ramped up the pressure, Atalanta finally cracked.
Cameroon forward Choupo-Moting’s cross found Neymar and he touched the ball to Marquinhos for his fellow Brazilian to fire home from close range. Minutes later, Neymar sent Mbappe down the left and his low cross was turned in by Choupo-Moting.
Atalanta had a chance to equalise but Luis Muriel, after breaking clear, ran the ball out of play and his team mates slumped to the ground in despair as the final whistle went.
Atalanta, a rare case of a team from outside the elite group of European clubs making the last eight of the competition, are based in Bergamo which was at the epicentre of the new coronavirus pandemic in Italy earlier this year.

Daily Briefing: EZ-Link, Touch ‘n Go launch dual-currency contactless card; Aura Group, Conduit House raised $82.07m for hotel upgrade

And Singapore carriers’ pilots and cabin crew who are returning from overseas to be tested for COVID-19.
From ChannelNewsAsia:
Motorists who travel regularly between Singapore and Malaysia could soon find it more convenient to do so with the launch of a new dual-currency contactless card by Singapore’s EZ-Link and Malaysia’s Touch ‘n Go.
The dual-currency cross-border card, which the companies say is a first for the region, will allow users to store both Singapore dollars and Malaysian ringgit in two electronic purses on the same card, EZ-Link said in a news release.
“The EZ-Link x Touch ‘n Go Motoring Card offers motorists the convenience and flexibility of payment options in both countries,” said the company.
The announcement came on the first day of the implementation of the Reciprocal Green Lane and Periodic Commuting Arrangement at the Singapore-Malaysia border.
“With the Reciprocal Green Lane established between Singapore and Malaysia and now in operation, motorists can look forward to a gradual and phased resumption of cross-border travel between the two countries,” said EZ-Link.

Singapore-headquartered fund manager Aura Group and real estate investment firm Conduit House have raised a $82.07m (US$60m) vehicle to invest in the refurbishment of The Montien Hotel Bangkok.
The Aura Conduit House Hospitality Fund 1, along with a side-car vehicle, will provide a structured credit investment to Tantakitt Company Limited, the operator of the five-star hotel.
Located in Silom, Bangkok’s central business district, The Montien Hotel Bangkok was opened in 1967 as the city’s first international standard five-star hotel.
Aura Conduit fund has assembled, structured and led the financing consortium including multiple institutional investors, Aura Group said in a statement.
The upgrade entails the refurbishment of its 500 rooms, construction of a 179-room serviced apartment and hotel, repositioning of an independent heritage-listed neighborhood retail mall, the introduction of destination dining and bars, and an integrated banquet and MICE space.

From ChannelNewsAsia:
Pilots and cabin crew working for Singapore carriers will be routinely tested for COVID-19 from Aug 20 after they return from overseas, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
This is on top of the health and safety protocols put in place earlier by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and CAAS.
However, air crew returning from places where travellers can serve their stay-home notice at their own accommodation will be exempt from the COVID-19 testing.
These include mainland China, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia, with the exception of the state of Victoria.
“Existing protocols have been effective in keeping air crew of Singapore carriers safe as there have been no positive COVID-19 cases among air crew of Singapore carriers for more than three months,” said CAAS.

Manchester United’s Front Three are Exceptional – But They Still Need Jadon Sancho

Manchester United have been pursuing Jadon Sancho for months, and are closing in on finally securing his signature ahead of the 2020/21 season.
The Red Devils have taken a step closer to making the move happen, with a Borussia Dortmund-imposed deadline of August 10 looming to get a deal done and dusted.
United’s mightily impressive form following lockdown and the top flight’s restart saw them eat away at Leicester’s eight-point advantage and book their place in the Champions League on the final day of the season – despite recording their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign nine games in.
The January arrival of Bruno Fernandes proved the catalyst for a huge upturn in fortunes at Old Trafford, and the front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood were in particularly devastating form.
Rashford and Martial found the net 44 times between them in all competitions, while half of Greenwood’s 10 top flight goals came in the final seven games of the season.
The performances of United’s front three towards the back end of the campaign began to beg the questions: do the Red Devils actually need to buy Jadon Sancho? And will his purchase stunt the development of Greenwood?
Firstly, Sancho is obviously ridiculously talented and one of the most exciting young players in European football right now.
He has scored 33 goals and provided 39 assists over the course of the last two seasons for one of the top clubs in Europe, in a foreign country at the age of just 20, which demonstrates both incredible ability and maturity. There is no question United should be in the market for a player of his class.
Additionally, United cannot rely on their esteemed front three for a full 50-odd games during the 2020/21 season. While they were able to rest players in the Europa League this year, they will likely not have the luxury of blooding fresh-legged youngsters in the Champions League if they are to progress past the group stages.
United’s lack of squad depth was highlighted towards the end of the season, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was effectively forced to choose between FA Cup success and Champions League qualification.
The United boss plumped for the Champions League, with Paul Pogba, Martial and Greenwood all rested for the FA Cup semi final defeat to Chelsea.
Even against 10-man Norwich in the previous round, an under strength United laboured to a 2-1 victory, with Solskjaer forced to introduce Pogba, Fernandes, Rashford, Martial and Greenwood from the bench to eventually break the Canaries resistance.
The Red Devils ultimately made the Champions League partly due to their exceptional post-lockdown form, but also partly because Leicester’s lack of strength in depth caused them to drop points during the hectic Christmas period, and their form slumped catastrophically in the final weeks of the season due to injuries to James Maddison, Ben Chillwell and Ricardo Pereira, in addition to Çağlar Söyüncü’s suspension.
Likewise, Wolves got off to a slow start to the season as their relatively small squad failed to balance the demands of the Premier League and the Europa League. This demonstrates just how vital it is to assemble a strong squad, and not just a starting XI.
Adding further world class quality to an already sensational front three is not only no bad thing, but arguably a necessity if United are to successfully compete on multiple fronts next season.
Rivals Manchester City currently enjoy such strength in depth that they were able to have a friendly amongst themselves in the build up to the season’s resumption. This is the calibre of team United are competing against.
The addition of Sancho will not only add another dimension of class and creativity to United’s attack, but will help to lighten the load on their already talented front three.
Rashford risked missing the rest of the season after suffering a double back fracture against Wolves in the FA Cup because Solskjaer was effectively forced to introduce him because United were running out of options. Signing Sancho will not restrict Rashford, but it will stop the Red Devils’ reliance on him.
Likewise, Greenwo…

Youmacon 2020 in Detroit will go on, organizers say

Though the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of many of southeastern Michigan’s signature events, the annual Youmacon pop culture gathering is still a go.
Held on the first weekend of November, the four-day event focuses on video games, anime (Japanese animation) and manga (Japanese comic books). Fans from across the country gather to shop, attend presentations and meet celebrities. Some dress as their favorite characters. Since 2013, Youmacon has been held at the TCF Center in conjunction with the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.
Since its inception in 2004, Youmacon has grown to become the third-largest anime convention in the Midwest. It drew 22,142 attendees in 2017.
In a March Facebook post, Youmacon announced its plans to proceed with the 2020 convention. Since then, organizers have uploaded applications for vendors and panel speakers. A July 16 post on Facebook said a link for securing hotel rooms at the Marriott would be available soon. As of Monday, the link was not available.
A link has been posted to your Facebook feed.
Youmacon spokesman Trevor Cuba said the decision to proceed with the 2020 event wasn’t made lightly. “We are contractually required to meet certain longstanding obligations to our venues, partners and other businesses that heavily depend on the convention running,” he said.
Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, which provides hotel rooms and event space for Youmacon, has no plans to cancel its arrangement with the convention, a representative said. However, the Marriott, which has been closely following Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s orders regarding public gatherings, won’t be able to provide meeting spaces for groups of more than 10, the representative said. Mary Klida, TCF Center’s senior marketing and communications manager, similarly said that the size of events TCF hosts will depend on the governor’s orders.
Cuba said that because of the changing regulations, Youmacon organizers won’t have an idea of the group size limits until closer to the convention date. As of now, they’re planning on limiting the number of people allowed in a given area instead of limiting the number of attendees for the entire event.

The reaction to Youmacon’s decision to proceed with its 2020 edition has been mixed on the event’s Facebook page. Many fans say they won’t be attending this year because of fears about COVID-19.
“The safety of our attendees, vendors, and crew is our No. 1 priority,” Cuba said. Tables and chairs will be spaced appropriately far apart, and lines will be minimized, he said. The lines that remain will require people to stand 6 feet apart, and all attendees will be required to wear masks.
In the event that Youmacon is canceled between now and November, there are plans for a virtual convention, organizers say.

Bentley Is Developing High-Performance Electric Motors That Use No Rare-Earth Magnets

Developed in the 1970s, rare-earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets made today. The more common type are neodymium alloys made with iron and boron, while the other group is samarium–cobalt magnets. The occurrence and production of these chemical elements raise both political and environmental concerns, so to find a more sustainable solution, the UK’s Office of Low Emission Vehicles is funding a nine-partner study called OCTOPUS (Optimised Components, Test and simulatiOn, toolkits for Powertrains which integrate Ultra high-speed motor Solutions). With Bentley joining for the next three years, the program will aim for real-world applications by 2026. Coincidentally, Bentley’s first full EV is also due that year.
The problem with cobalt is that while demand for it is rising exponentially, half of the known reserves are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That makes it a conflict resource, as well as a material often mined using child labor. The largest boron deposits happen to be in Turkey. China is the main producer of samarium, and the same can be said about neodymium. Copper wiring seems easy enough, yet the world’s largest mine is the Grasberg, a rather unhappy place located in the Indonesian province of Papua.
While one part of Bentley is busy recreating Sir Tim Birkin’s 1929 Blowers, another team within the OCTOPUS program should deliver a full e-axle powertrain without rare-earth magnets that not only exceeds the performance of the latest permanent magnet motors but also removes the need for copper windings, delivering a package hat’s both cost-effective and recyclable.
Now, all the industry needs to find is a cleaner battery technology than lithium-ions. The world’s largest lithium reserves are in China and Bolivia, two countries that are known for their dubious labor practices.
In the meantime, get ready for the 2023 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid. Shown here is the titanium exhausts of the 2021 V8.
