Free Press marathon Michelob ULTRA runner of the week: Alexandra LaCombe

Each week, the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon chooses a runner to spotlight as the Michelob ULTRA Runner of the Week. Whether you’re training for a full marathon, going out on the weekend for a long run or getting back into the swing of running, the race loves to showcase its runners.
The marathon is proud to partner with Michelob ULTRA, the Official Malt Beverage sponsor of the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon. Michelob ULTRA will be sending each winner a prize pack.

[ Registration open for 2020 Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon ]
Location: Troy.
Age: 51.
How long you’ve been running: Since Jan. 2016.
Your running story, and if you feel comfortable, your latest PR or race times: I have a friend who runs, and I was always secretly in awe of her. As we talked about her running journey, I thought, I can do this! I immediately set my sights on the Free Press half marathon. And I never looked back! I am still a very slow #oldladyrunning, but I am grateful to be off the couch and moving. I have done the Free Press half marathon twice, and the Vegas half marathon on my 50th birthday. I would love to do the original Athens marathon someday – I hear they give you eight hours to finish!
How many miles do you run per week: About 15-20.
Favorite running song: I do not run to music, but I usually have Broadway show tunes running through my head.
Favorite post-run snack: Fruit. And also a beer.
Best piece of training advice: I think it is important to know your own body and find the balance between not pushing too hard yet still challenging yourself. As I am an older runner, I have to remind myself to be gentle and have fun because I am training for my own joy and fitness, but also to not slack off. Listen to your body!
Do you run for any charities: I usually run to raise money for the American Cancer Society. A dear friend of mine died from cancer 3 years ago, and I run in her memory.
Are you planning on running in any Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank events in 2020: I am registered for the relay and The Temptation challenge (one mile and the 5k), which is what I did last year.
