How to Stop China From Imposing Its Values

On their own, few countries are powerful enough to stand up to bullying by China, and the existing security alliances upon which the world’s major democracies depend weren’t built to address the economic threats now emanating from Beijing. This spring, shortly after Australia called for an international investigation into the origins of COVID-19, the Chinese ambassador to that country threatened an economic boycott, declaring that the Chinese public could go without Australian wine and beef, among other products. Since China is Australia’s largest export market, this was no small threat. Subsequently, China blocked imports from major Australian meat producers and placed tariffs on Australian barley. More and more, China is using its massive economic weight to threaten countries that challenge its actions, criticize its leaders, or express sympathy for people whom it considers dissidents or separatists.
In April, Chinese officials threatened the European Union with unnamed repercussions if an official EU report described a Chinese “global disinformation campaign” related to COVID-19. (The EU toned down the report.) Beijing has threatened economic harm to German automakers if Germany attempts to exclude equipment made by the Chinese telecom giant Huawei from its 5G networks. Last year, China also threatened to impose trade restrictions on Sweden after a Chinese Swedish author was awarded a prize for persecuted writers by the Swedish chapter of the group PEN International. These moves represent a kind of economic imperialism. The Chinese Communist Party, which suppresses dissent at home, is trying to force other countries to abide by its authoritarian norms and use its preferred company to build their own essential communications networks.
[Lindsay Gorman: 5G is where China and the West finally diverge]
In the United States, suspicion of the Chinese government is a bipartisan matter, but no consensus exists about just what to do. The Trump administration has implemented a variety of hawkish policies, including restricting semiconductor sales in China and stopping a U.S. government retirement fund from investing in stocks there, and the president himself vowed Friday to ban TikTok, a popular app owned by a Chinese company. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called in a recent speech for “a new alliance of democracies” to counter the emerging superpower, although few details were offered. The draft of the 2020 Democratic Party platform broadly vows to “rally friends and allies across the world to push back against China or any other country’s attempts to undermine international norms.”
The problem is that the United States and its allies currently lack the ability to respond to the type of geo-economic threats that China is making. Specifically, they need a means of taking collective action when Beijing attempts to use economic power as a tool of political coercion. No country should face such threats alone.
[Peter Beinart: Democrats are letting Trump frame the debate about China]
Many of America’s most important Cold War–era institutions, especially NATO, were designed to deter a primarily military threat from the Soviet Union. But back then, Moscow-unlike Beijing now-had limited economic leverage against the West. Global economic institutions such as the World Trade Organization were narrowly focused on trade agreements and rule-making to ensure fair economic competition, but did not consider the possibility of economic warfare or the danger of economic threats to force political concessions. Indeed, none of these alliances or institutions has been any help in addressing the Chinese economic threats against Australia, Germany, Sweden, or other nations.
Those threats also harm the United States. If China forces U.S. allies to use Huawei’s technology in their information networks, American communications that go through those networks could be exposed to the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration. And China’s rulers have sought to enforce the party line on Americans. Last year, Beijing punished the NBA’s Houston Rockets when the team’s general manager offered support for Hong Kong’s prodemocracy pr…

Volkswagen Poznań: Expansion of plant for new Caddy on the home straight

The expansion of the plant in Poznań has taken over two years – now the preparations for full production of the new Caddy are nearly finished. Changes made during the remodelling included the construction of a logistics hall, expansion of the body shop and reconfiguration of the factory site.
Dietmar Mnich, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Poznań and Poznań Plant Director: “We have concluded around 90 per cent of the capital investment for preparing the plant for production of the latest vehicle models, in particular the new Caddy. The first few vehicles for testing the production processes are currently running through the new facilities. We are planning to start full production in September and then to gradually ramp up the volume and ultimately reach full capacity in 2021.”
Integration of the plant site
The first stage of the expansion process was the integration of two parts of the plant site, which had previously been separated by a minor public road. Thanks to a proactive dialogue with the local community it was possible in January 2019 to incorporate Smołdzinowska Road into the factory lands and thus to join together both parts of the plant on one site.
New logistics hall
The next step was the construction of the new logistics hall. It provides warehouse space of 46,000m² for components for production of the Caddy and T6.1: engines, bumpers, side windows, door trim panels, bulkheads and fuel tanks. By virtue of the hall being right next to the production facility up to 260 lorry trips per day between Poznań and the site in Swarzędz will in future be saved.
Expansion of the body shop – 14,000m² more space and 450 new robots
The greatest financial and organisational challenge of the past two years was the expansion of the body shop. In addition to the hall, which covers a total of over 14,000m² and has a storage capacity of 200,000m³, Volkswagen Poznań also invested above all in modern technology: 450 new robots capable of multiple functions are being used in the new Caddy’s body shop. They enable precise working and welding of the high-strength, hot folded metal sheets. At the same time, the level of automation in the body shop is rising from 43 per cent originally to over 80 per cent.
New skills in production
The automation of the production processes brings with it comprehensive organisational changes too. “In tandem with the technical advances come requirements for our employees to learn new skills. Making the body of the new Caddy requires much less manual work. The demands in relation to controlling the plant and machinery meanwhile are going up nearly threefold. Over the last two years, we have therefore run over 1,800 training sessions for the plant in Poznań, the aim of which has been to retrain and upskill the team for their new tasks”, says Jolanta Musielak, Member of the Board of Management for Human Resources and Administration.

Ford Confirms 150,000 Bronco Reservations in Just 18 Days

Ford Motor Company debuted its long-awaited Bronco SUV earlier this month to great fanfare. The virtual rollout was unprecedented and all indications since then have pointed to healthy demand for the new vehicle, but now we know just how healthy it is. Ford confirmed to The Drive Friday that it has received over 150,000 customer reservations for the new off-roader. At $100 a pop, that’s $15 million in reservation funds thus far.
We knew that the Bronco was popular, as the First Edition model has sold out twice now, but now we know how many vehicles have been reserved overall-or at least have a pretty darn good idea. While that all may sound like a good deal for Ford, it’s important to remember that those deposits don’t represent actual orders. A lot can happen between now and December, when actual orders are expected to begin. Also, deposits are fully refundable at any time.

Both the two- and four-door Bronco models will be built at the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant and the Bronco Sport will be built in Mexico. Ford’s big focus now is trying to determine exactly how many of those deposits will convert to actual orders when the time comes, as it will help it make staffing decisions at each factory to meet the demand.
Ford has previously confirmed that it will focus on building the pre-ordered Broncos before starting general production, so it’s unlikely that there will be a herd of SUVs sitting at your local dealer until at least 2022. Several Bronco trim levels are still available to reserve, in both body styles, so your best bet to get ahold of one will be to put down a reservation.
