Harvard Scientists Finally Manipulate Near-Field Light

Have you heard of near field-light? It is the light that stays behind when regular light hits a surface. This type of light is not transmitted or scattered away so it stays right where it was.

It’s invisible to the human eye of, course, but that does not mean it does not have useful properties. Today, it is used for ultra-high-resolution microscopy, known as the near-field scanning optical microscopes (NSOM) but a bunch of Harvard scientists believe it might be useful in particle manipulation, sensing, and optical communications.
The only thing required is to figure out how to manipulate it. Now, Harvard researchers have devised a new system to mold near-field light.
“Over the years, our group has developed new powerful techniques to structure propagating light using subwavelength-patterned metasurfaces,” said Federico Capasso, the Robert Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering, and senior author of the paper.
“With this work, we show how to structure the near field at a distance, opening exciting opportunities in science and technology.”
But wait, isn’t near field light invisible to the human eye? How can you manipulate what you cannot see? The researchers achieved this by developing a device in which light confined to a waveguide jumps back and forth between two reflectors.
After each jump, it changes mode. This indicates that it now propagates with a different spatial pattern. When all these different patterns are superimposed, a shape is created. The researchers can then successfully design that shape by tailoring the amplitude of the modes of the bouncing light.
The researchers compare it to music. One note alone does not make a track but all notes together can create different genres of music. To demonstrate this theory, the researchers designed near-field light into the shape of an elephant proving that the light can indeed be manipulated.

We’ve got both good and bad news about the 2020 Formula 1 race schedule-let’s have the latter first. Because the United States and its South American counterpart Brazil are competing for the COVID-19 high score, F1 has ruled out racing in the Americas in 2020, and that goes for our neighbors Canada and Mexico too. This dark cloud has a silver lining, and that’s the news that F1 will bring back three blasts from its past with races at the Nürburgring and venues in Portugal and Imola.
The infamous ‘Ring will be the first of these new additions, ushering in an October of racing on the weekend of the 9th through the 11th. This event will not be held on the 12.9-mile Nordschleife, which F1 last raced for the 1976 German Grand Prix that almost took Niki Lauda’s life, but instead its shorter Grand Prix circuit. Said layout was most recently visited by F1 in 2013, when Sebastian Vettel claimed his most recent win in Germany, and what would yet be his final world title.
Following two weeks thereafter will be the Portuguese Grand Prix, which last ran in 1996 at Circuito do Estoril. Portugal’s comeback, though, will instead be held at Algarve International Circuit in Portimao, where F1 has tested in the past, but never raced. F1 will bookend October by revisiting Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, which most people know as Imola; the place where sporting icon Ayrton Senna lost his life. F1 hasn’t raced there since 2006, and the circuit’s sudden return will mark the third race held in Italy this season, preceded by events at Monza and Mugello. It is at these events that Scuderia Ferrari will run its 999th and 1,000th championship races.
These additions bring the 2020 F1 season’s length to a total of 13 races, and F1 plans to add as many as five further events as plans solidify. F1 still hopes to wrap up the 2020 season with a finale “in the Gulf in mid-December,” signaling that Abu Dhabi may once again herald the arrival of the winter break-though with car development partially frozen for 2021, it won’t resemble the engineering frenzies of past years.

Space photos: The most amazing images this week!

Perceptive viewers noticed a tardigrade-shaped speck in new imagery from the sun, a NASA scientist grew radishes for a moon-food experiment and the Hubble Space Telescope captured the sight of a sea of galaxies. These are some of the top photos this week from Space.com.


The JIRAM instrument aboard NASA’s Juno spacecraft took these images on Dec. 26, 2019. They provide the first infrared mapping of Ganymede’s northern regions. The $1.1 billion Juno probe launched in August 2011 and arrived at Jupiter in July 2016 on a mission to help scientists better understand the giant planet and its moons.

This moving image shows a timelapse of growing radishes that a NASA scientist has been monitoring from home. This experiment emerged from research work by the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in which scientists wanted to learn how astronauts on the moon might be able to grow their own food. This experiment is being conducted at a scientist’s home because the team had to begin to work remotely as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

On July 18, 2020, astrophotographer Evan Zucker and his wife, Paula, drove three hours to the Mojave Desert north of Desert Center, California, to see Comet NEOWISE. “The comet itself was a very obvious naked eye object, even all the way down to the horizon, but the ion tail was a challenge to perceive naked eye,” Zucker wrote on Facebook. They used a Sony a7iii camera with a Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM lens, set to f/1.4 and ISO 800, mounted on a 6-in. Celestron telescope to provide tracking. The single 13-second exposure was processed in Adobe Lightroom and Topaz AI De-Noise.

NASA astronaut Doug Hurley snapped this incredible shot of the Sobradinho Reservoir and São Francisco River in Brazil from the International Space Station and posted it to Twitter on July 21. Hurley flew to the space station May 30 aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon vehicle Endeavour as part of the Demo-2 mission and is set to return to Earth on August 2.
While it might look like a cosmic, space brain, this is actually an image of G292.0+1.8, a young, oxygen-rich remnant from a supernova that scientists think has a pulsar at its center, surrounded by outflowing material. The image, taken by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory


Observations using Chandra have created strong evidence that there is a pulsar in G292.0+1.8. Using observations like this, astronomers can study the connection between pulsars (a magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits electromagnetic radiation) and massive stars.
In this image, you can see a shell of expanding gas 36 light-years across. The gas contains elements including oxygen, neon, magnesium, silicon and sulfur.
